TWO SBSO DEPUTIES RECEIVE KIWANIS LIFESAVER AWARDS
Two St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office deputies received Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi Sammie Catalanotto LifeSaver Awards at a banquet hosted by the Kiwanis Club on July 8 at Rocky and Carlo’s Restaurant in Chalmette, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Dep. Trevor Lane and Dep. Chase Richard, both assigned to the Corrections Division at the St. Bernard Parish Prison, were recognized with this honor for their heroic actions in March, when they intervened to save the life of a woman who was being brutally attacked.
While returning home from Slidell after a day at Peace Officer Standards and Training — commonly referred to as P.O.S.T. school — Deputies Lane and Richard encountered a scene none of us would ever want to witness.
As they were driving on the Twin Span, they saw a woman on the shoulder of the bridge being violently attacked by a man. It was clear her life was in immediate danger.
These deputies didn’t freeze. They didn’t hesitate. They didn’t wait for backup.
Instead, Deputies Lane and Richard ran toward the danger. They subdued the attacker. And most importantly — they saved that woman’s life.
In a moment that demanded courage, instinct, and decisive action — they delivered.
It’s important to note: At the time of this incident, Deputies Lane and Richard were still cadets in training. They had only recently begun their law enforcement careers with SBSO in the fall of 2023. Yet, in that critical moment, they acted with the clarity and confidence of seasoned professionals.
Their actions also reflect the priority Sheriff Pohlmann places on comprehensive training and preparation, ensuring his deputies are equipped — both mentally and physically — to respond effectively to any situation they may face.
“Their quick thinking, courage, and professionalism under extreme pressure are commendable — especially so early in their careers,” the Sheriff said. “Deputies Lane and Richard exemplified exactly what it means to serve and protect.”
Col. Kevin Sensebe, commander of the Corrections Division and the deputies’ supervisor, said both men demonstrated exceptional bravery.
“What these two deputies did that day is nothing short of heroic,” Col. Sensebe said. “They represent the very best of this profession, and I’m honored to serve alongside them.”
For Deputies Lane and Richard — who both graduated from P.O.S.T. school in May — receiving the Kiwanis LifeSaver Award is an honor, but not something they ever expected.
“I didn’t do this expecting a reward,” Dep. Lane said. “Protecting and serving my community is something I’ve always been driven to do. When I was presented with a moment to take action, I did it — not only because that’s what the Academy was teaching me to do, but because it’s second nature.”
Dep. Richard echoed those sentiments, adding, “It’s an honor to be recognized for a job well done. Because of me and Dep. Lane, everyone was able to go home at the end of the day. That’s what matters most.”
Congratulations, Deputies Lane and Richard. Your actions remind us all why this work matters — and why the commitment to serve others is so vital.
