Traditional Positions

Our primary focus at the SBSO is to provide law enforcement services to the citizens of St. Bernard Parish. We offer a variety of traditional law enforcement positions including:

  • Deputy Sheriff
  • 911/Communications Dispatchers
  • Correctional Officers
  • Detective
  • Volunteer Reserve Officers

Nontraditional Positions

The SBSO is a complex organization and offers a wide variety of civilian employment opportunities on top of the traditional law enforcement and corrections positions.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary starting at $45,200 annually

  • State Supplemental Pay $600 monthly, $7,200 annually

  • Free health insurance for employees (roughly $400 per month value)

  • Lifetime health insurance after 15 consecutive years

  • Sheriff’s Office contributes 10.25 % to employee’s pension

  • Earn 2 weeks paid vacation on first anniversary (maximum of 4 weeks after 10 years of service)

  • Earn 12 sick days per year (8 hours a month)

  • Free life insurance, 1 1/2 times your annual salary plus $10,000

  • $3000 annual salary increase every 5 years.

  • Education, $150 per month with Bachelor’s degree, additional $150 per month for Master’s degree, $300 for Doctorate.

  • Access to credit union, dental insurance, vision insurance, and deferred compensation

  • Retire at 30 years at 100% salary (minimum age 55)

  • Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP)

General Requirements

To begin a career at the SBSO, applicants must meet the following minimum entry requirements:

  • Must be a United States Citizen

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must have graduated from an accredited high school or received a G.E.D.

  • Must be of good moral character and pass an extensive background check

  • Pass a pre-employment examination with a competitive score

  • Pass an oral interview and a polygraph examination

  • Pass a thorough medical examination, including a drug screen

  • Must have no felony, drug or domestic convictions

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and social security card
