Pedestrian Killed in St. Bernard Parish Crash

Chalmette – On Thursday, March 27, 2025, around 8:00 pm, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a crash involving a pedestrian on LA 39 near Plaza Drive in St. Bernard Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 66-year-old Karen Joseph of Chalmette.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Joseph was walking north, crossing LA 39 near Plaza Drive. At the same time, a 2015 Toyota Camry was traveling west on LA 39, approaching Plaza Drive in the right lane. For reasons still under investigation, Joseph walked into the westbound lanes of LA 39, in an area without a designated crosswalk, and was struck by the Toyota. As a result, Joseph suffered severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.

At the time of the crash, the driver of the Toyota was properly restrained and uninjured. Routine toxicology samples were obtained, and results are pending analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Practicing pedestrian safety guidelines while crossing and walking near roadways is crucial in reducing the risk of crashes. Pedestrians should always cross roads at a designated crosswalk. Walking against the direction of traffic enables pedestrians to anticipate oncoming vehicles and react promptly. Additionally, wearing brightly colored clothing or using reflective accessories when walking in low-light conditions can significantly improve visibility for drivers. By following these practices, pedestrians can enhance their safety and minimize the chances of collisions.
