The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a Chalmette man and his accomplice was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service in New Orleans following an attempted traffic stop that took place recently in Violet, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Darryl Fortenberry, 27, of the 3400 block of Lyndell Drive in Chalmette, was booked Aug. 12 with illegal possession of a weapon in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, possession with intent to distribute MDMA (Ecstasy), possession with the intent to distribute Fentanyl, flight from an officer and obstruction of justice. He also was booked on an outstanding warrant out of Jefferson Parish for a traffic attachment.

Dalvin Major, 27, of the 14000 block of Peltier Drive in New Orleans, was apprehended Aug. 25 in New Orleans by the U.S. Marshals Service and booked with illegal possession of a weapon in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, possession with intent to distribute MDMA (Ecstasy), possession with the intent to distribute Fentanyl, aggravated flight from an officer, obstruction of justice, aggravated criminal damage to property, reckless operation of a vehicle and front window tint violation.

On Aug. 12, shortly after noon, Sheriff Pohlmann said, Special Investigations Division Narcotics Unit agents who were making proactive patrols in the Violet area attempted to conduct a traffic stop for front windshield tint on a white BMW SUV traveling westbound on East St. Bernard Highway.

As agents attempted to make the traffic stop the driver of the BMW, later identified as Major, refused to stop. As Major was fleeing he and the passenger in the vehicle, later identified as Fortenberry, began throwing items out of the vehicle’s sunroof.

Agents observed the subjects in the vehicle throw a clear plastic bag containing what later tested positive to be MDMA (Ecstasy) and Fentanyl. They also were seen throwing from the car a firearm which was later identified as a New Orleans Police Department issued Glock 22 .40 caliber firearm listed as stolen out of Jefferson Parish and a Glock 19 .9 mm firearm.

During the incident, Sheriff Pohlmann said, Major lost control of the vehicle, striking and destroying a brick sign that was located at the intersection of Colonial Boulevard and East St. Bernard Highway. The vehicle eventually came to a stop when Major struck the side of a business located at the same corner. Both men then exited the car and fled on foot.

Fortenberry was apprehended nearby shortly after the incident by SBSO deputies, and Major was apprehended Aug. 25 by the U.S. Marshals Service.

Criminal history background checks were conducted on both men which revealed Fortenberry has a prior conviction for armed robbery and Major has prior convictions for armed robbery and attempted second degree murder.

Sheriff Pohlmann reminds residents to call the Sheriff’s Office narcotics hotline at (504) 271-DOPE or 3673 to report suspected illegal drug activity in St. Bernard Parish. Callers can remain anonymous, and all calls will be acted upon.
