St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrests two on narcotics and weapons charges
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a man and woman on narcotics distribution and weapons charges following an investigation conducted in Violet by the Special Investigations Division Narcotics Unit, Sheriff James Pohlmann said. A stolen handgun and cash also were recovered.
Janard Walton Jr., 37, of the 100 block of Marche Boulevard in Slidell, and Darrelyn Smith, 33, of the 2800 block of Daniel Drive in Violet, were both booked Dec. 9 with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with persons under the age of 17, and possession of Alprazolam (Xanax).
After obtaining information that Smith was involved in illegal drug activity in St. Bernard, Narcotics Unit agents opened an investigation. Based on their findings, agents obtained a search warrant for Smith’s residence, Sheriff Pohlmann said.
During the investigation, agents recovered approximately 40 grams of cocaine, marijuana, and several doses of Alprazolam (Xanax) with a combined street value of approximately $4,000.
Agents also recovered a stolen black Ruger .9mm handgun, and more than $3,500 in cash, as well as digital scales and clear plastic bags.
Criminal history checks were conducted on both subjects. Walton has an extensive violent criminal history having prior arrests for possession/distribution of illegal narcotics, as well as several weapons charges, as recent as 2016 out of Orleans Parish. Smith also has had prior arrests for distribution/possession of illegal narcotics, as recent as 2016 out of Jefferson Parish.
Walton and Smith were both transported to St. Bernard Parish Prison to be booked on the above charges.
