St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrests Chalmette man in connection with homicide in Meraux
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a Chalmette man for the fatal shooting of a Braithwaite man that occurred on April 7 in Meraux, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Brandon Encalade, 34, of the 3700 block of Shangri-La Drive in Chalmette, was booked with second degree murder for the shooting and killing of 24-year-old Joshua Mayberry of the 15000 block of Highway 15 in Braithwaite.
Shortly before 7 a.m. on April 7, Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies responded to a call about a male seen lying on the side of the road in the 4200 block of East St. Bernard Highway in Meraux.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a male victim, later identified as Mayberry, with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Based on information obtained during the course of the investigation, along with video surveillance, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau were able to identify Encalade as the shooter.
Detectives also learned Mayberry and Encalade were acquaintances who were involved in a dispute over a woman.
Sheriff Pohlmann said this was an isolated incident and no one else was injured.
The investigation is ongoing, the Sheriff said.
