St. Bernard Parish Government and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association will host a memorial service today (Dec. 7) beginning at 11 a.m. at Pearl Harbor Memorial Park, 7215 W. Judge Perez Drive in Arabi. The service will be broadcast live on Facebook on parish government’s Facebook page.
On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese planes attacked the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory, killing more than 2,300 Americans. The U.S.S. Arizona was completely destroyed and the U.S.S. Oklahoma capsized.
The attack also destroyed 188 U.S. aircraft and sank or damaged 19 Navy ships. Now, 81 years later, the significance of Pearl Harbor stays with us as Americans remember that this attack launched the United States into World War II. We should also remember this date as a symbol of American grit and resilience.
