🚨🚔❄️⚠️
SBSO WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY
Sheriff James Pohlmann urges everyone to stay informed on this approaching historic winter weather event by following updates from parish and weather officials, and stay off the roads once the inclement weather moves into our area.
Your safety is our top priority!!
Please review these tips to prepare:
🏠 Home Safety
➡️Let one faucet, the one farthest from your water meter, run a pencil thin line to prevent frozen pipes; open cabinet doors for warmth.
➡️Disconnect outdoor hoses and know where your water shutoff is.
➡️Keep your thermostat set to 60°F or higher and avoid using stoves or ovens for heat.
🐾 Pet Safety
➡️Bring pets indoors; if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.
➡️If pets must stay outside, provide shelter, bedding, and unfrozen water.
➡️Tap your car hood before starting to scare off animals seeking warmth.
🔥 Heating & Fire Safety
➡️Keep space heaters 3 feet away from flammable items and never leave them unattended.
➡️Use generators outdoors, away from windows and doors; install carbon monoxide detectors.
➡️Test smoke and CO alarms regularly and replace batteries as needed.
🌱 Plant Protection
➡️Cover plants with light-colored fabric; water soil before freezing temperatures.
➡️Bring potted plants indoors or into a garage.
🚔Road Safety Tips
The Sheriff strongly advises avoiding travel, but if you absolutely must drive for a valid reason or emergency:
➡️Slow Down: Drive well below the speed limit on slick roads.
➡️Smooth Maneuvers: Accelerate and brake gently; avoid sudden steering.
➡️Keep Distance: Allow extra space between vehicles.
➡️Stay Alert: Watch for icy patches, snow, and other hazards.
➡️If You Slide: Stay calm, ease off the gas, and steer in the direction you want to go.
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office will continue monitoring conditions and providing updates as needed.
For emergencies, call 9-1-1. For non-emergency concerns, call (504) 271-2501.
Stay safe, and stay warm St. Bernard Parish!
