SBSO WILL CONDUCT EXTRA PATROLS FOR VACATIONING RESIDENTS
St. Bernard Parish residents planning to be away for an extended time – whether for vacation or work – can request extra patrols by the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office to help protect their property while they’re gone, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
“When you’re tying up those last-minute details before leaving town, don’t forget to give us a call for extra patrols,” Sheriff Pohlmann said.
To request this free service, residents can call the Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501.
All information provided is kept confidential and shared only with deputies assigned to patrol the area where the resident lives.
Sheriff Pohlmann also encourages residents to leave a reliable contact number so deputies can get in touch if anything happens while they’re away – whether it’s a crime concern or damage caused by severe weather.
“This service has been around for years and gives residents peace of mind knowing their home will be checked on regularly while they’re out of town,” Sheriff Pohlmann said.
Lt. Eric Eilers, head of Community Relations, offers the following crime prevention tips to help keep your home secure while you’re away:
➡Lock up everything. Double-check all doors and windows before you leave. In the rush to get out the door, this basic step is often overlooked.
➡Be cautious about who you tell. While it’s important to have someone you trust keep an eye on your home, don’t broadcast your travel plans – especially on voicemail or social media. Wait to post vacation photos until after you return.
➡Make it look like someone is home. Park a car in the driveway, mow the lawn before you leave, or ask a neighbor to do it while you’re gone.
➡Use timers and motion sensors. Set indoor lights, TVs, or radios on timers. Use motion-activated or dusk-to-dawn lighting outside. LED bulbs are a good choice because they run cool and last longer.
➡Pause your deliveries. Stop newspaper and package deliveries, or have someone you trust collect them daily so they don’t pile up.
➡Hide spare keys smartly. Avoid the usual spots – like under doormats, flowerpots, or window ledges. Burglars know to check there first.
➡Trim shrubbery. Overgrown plants near doors or windows can give intruders cover. Keep them cut back.
➡Set your alarm system. Make sure it’s armed before you leave. Notify your monitoring company and provide them with emergency contact info.
➡Notify your Neighborhood Watch. If you’re part of one, let them know about your plans so they can be extra alert.
