SBSO WARNS LATEST SCAM TRENDS TARGETING RESIDENTS
A new scam trend involving fake rental listings on TikTok and other social media platforms is targeting residents, with scammers using videos and online posts to advertise fake properties and collect deposits through cash apps, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
“These types of scams are evolving, and criminals are using social media and technology to make their schemes appear more and more credible,” the Sheriff said. “Residents should always take the time to verify who they are dealing with before sending any money.”
In addition to rental scams, the Sheriff’s Office is also warning residents about other common scams reported in the area, including:
⚠️Calls or texts from individuals claiming to be deputies, asking you to call back and provide a reference number
⚠️Text messages claiming to be from state Departments of Motor Vehicles, threatening license suspension, vehicle registration cancellation, and even prosecution for unpaid fines or violations.
⚠️Messages claiming you missed jury duty and must pay a fine to avoid arrest
⚠️Notifications about unpaid tolls directing you to fraudulent payment websites
⚠️Contacts claiming issues with bank accounts, returned checks or unpaid funds
⚠️Threats of arrest unless immediate payment is made using gift cards, wire transfers or cash apps
⚠️Requests to discuss a vague “legal matter” in an attempt to obtain personal information
Sheriff Pohlmann emphasized that law enforcement will never request payment over the phone or demand unusual forms of payment.
Residents are urged to:
🛑Be cautious of unsolicited calls, texts or messages
🛑Avoid clicking suspicious links
🛑Verify information through official channels
🛑Never share personal or financial information with unknown individuals
🛑Speak with a trusted person if something feels suspicious
Anyone who believes they may have been the victim of a scam or has received suspicious communication is asked to contact the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501.☎️
