SBSO VISITS CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP SUMMER CAMP
The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office participated in Christian Fellowship Church’s Camp Conquer Summer Camp Law Enforcement Day held Friday, July 10, at the church in Violet.
During the visit, Sheriff James Pohlmann spent time talking with the children about the important work performed by his deputies, and the value of making good decisions.
The children eagerly asked him questions about law enforcement, including how many people are housed in the parish jail, what deputies do each day, whether the Sheriff likes donuts, and even how he makes his patrol vehicle’s siren and lights work, or as the children put it, “how do they make them go woo-woo.”
Their curiosity made for an engaging and memorable discussion while helping them gain a better understanding of the role deputies play in serving and protecting the community and keeping its residents safe.
Summer camp participants also got to see various pieces of equipment, including the Sheriff’s Office Mobile Emergency Operations Center, the Special Operations Division’s SWAT truck, the Marine Division’s airboat, tactical vests, ballistic shields, and other specialized equipment.
Rev. Henry Ballard, pastor of Christian Fellowship, said the purpose of the event is to provide children with an opportunity to meet the Sheriff and other law enforcement officers in a non-intimidating environment, encouraging them to ask questions and interact with deputies.
Christian Fellowship holds the camp for several weeks during the summer, with activities geared toward boys and girls ages 5 to 12. Activities include field trips and sessions focused on self-esteem and ways to resist bullying.
Sheriff Pohlmann said deputies spending time with young people is something that’s very important to him.
“We should always take advantage of these opportunities to interact with the children in our community,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “They’re our future, so creating positive relationships with them benefits everyone in the long run.”
