SBSO TO PARTICIPATE IN ‘CLICK IT OR TICKET’ CAMPAIGN
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is taking part in the national “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement campaign to highlight the dangers of driving or riding without a seat belt, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
From Saturday, Nov. 22 through Saturday, Nov. 29, deputies will be out on parish streets and highways participating in the campaign, which is sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Seat belts remain one of the most effective ways to save lives in a crash, yet many drivers and passengers still choose not to buckle up.
According to the NHTSA “Click It or Ticket” is a national high-visibility enforcement and public awareness campaign designed to emphasize the importance of seat belt use and the consequences of failing to do so – including fines.
In Louisiana, seat belt violations can result in a $50 fine per unrestrained adult and $100 per unrestrained child, with higher penalties for repeat offenses.
Sheriff Pohlmann, who serves on the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission representing the 1st Congressional District, said campaigns like this one are vital tools for improving roadway safety.
“These types of programs promote safety on our state roads and highway systems,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “Too many people are needlessly killed or injured each year in traffic accidents.”
