SBSO RESPONDS TO SUSPICIOUS PERSON ON CAMPUS

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for service at Chalmette High School around 1:30 p.m. in reference to a suspicious person seen with a rifle in the rear parking lot of the Ninth Grade Academy, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Deputies quickly located the person in question and learned it was a Chalmette High School art teacher involved in the theater production carrying a prop gun being brought into the school for an upcoming production.

The art teacher was unaware of the recent series of events prompting a heightened concern for campus safety.

Out of an abundance of caution, the school was placed on lockdown for a short period of time until the scene was secured and no imminent danger was confirmed.

Deputies were already displaying a presence on campus due to an off-campus incident that occurred yesterday in Meraux involving several Chalmette High School students.

Sheriff Pohlmann said deputies will remain on the campus tomorrow.
