SBSO REMINDS RESIDENTS SCHOOL IS BACK IN SESSION THIS WEEK

The 2023-24 school year for St. Bernard Parish schools begins this week, and Sheriff James Pohlmann reminds residents to drive cautiously and obey school zone speed limits in the mornings and afternoons.

β€œWe want residents to be mindful of reduced speed limits near our schools, and watch for students walking in the areas near schools,” the Sheriff said. β€œAlso, be prepared for school buses making frequent stops to pick up or drop off students.”

St. Bernard Parish Public Schools start tomorrow (Aug. 7), along with Our Lady of Prompt Succor. St. Bernard Christian Academy will open Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Sheriff Pohlmann said school crossing guards will be out directing traffic near schools for drop off and pick up times.

Also, deputies with the Field Operations Bureau Traffic Division will be making extra patrols in school areas during mornings and afternoons to ensure residents are driving cautiously and being mindful of posted speed limits.

β€œDrive smart, keep your eyes on the road, and let’s keep our kids safe!,” the Sheriff said.

To report any traffic issues in school zones, call (504) 271-2501 or (504) 278-7677.

Best of luck on a new school year to all of our students, faculty and staff!
