SBSO REMINDS RESIDENTS OF LAWS PROHIBITING 4-WHEELERS AND DIRT BIKES
Each summer, complaints rise about residents illegally riding 4-wheel all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes on streets, highways, private property, and along the Mississippi River levee system in St. Bernard Parish — and several recent incidents have resulted in serious injuries, including one that may be life-threatening, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
While many young people are simply looking for ways to enjoy their summer, the Sheriff said these accidents often involve unsafe practices, such as riding in the wrong direction, operating on roadways not meant for such use, and failing to wear proper safety gear like helmets.
Sheriff Pohlmann said the law and public safety must come first.
“We can’t allow these unsafe practices just because it’s summertime and the kids are bored,” he said. “When operated carelessly or in the wrong areas, these vehicles pose a real danger. We want everyone to enjoy their break, but we want them to get home safely more.”
The Sheriff urges families to prioritize safety and awareness.
“Some of these situations are heartbreaking and can be prevented,” the Sheriff said. “We’re not looking to assign blame – we want to make sure no other family has to go through this. Talk with your children, know where they’re riding, and make sure they understand the rules of the roadway and the risks involved.”
The Sheriff said deputies will issue citations when they catch riders operating ATVs or dirt bikes illegally, and vehicles may be impounded.
Anyone who witnesses someone driving an ATV or dirt bike illegally in St. Bernard Parish is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501 or the Traffic Division hotline at (504) 278-7677 to file a complaint.
