SBSO REMINDS MOTORISTS ABOUT SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office has recently received numerous complaints from school bus drivers about motorists failing to stop for buses while students are being picked up or dropped off, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
🛑When a school bus displays flashing red lights and extends its stop sign, drivers approaching from either direction must stop and remain stopped until the signals are withdrawn and the bus begins moving again.
🚸Children may be crossing the roadway, and passing a stopped school bus could lead to a student being injured or a devastating tragedy.
Motorists also are reminded to obey posted speed limits, slow down in school zones and remain alert for children, crossing guards and increased traffic around schools.
Under Louisiana law, illegally passing a stopped school bus can result in a fine of up to $500, up to six months in jail, or both. Additional penalties may apply if someone is injured or killed.
“No appointment or destination is more important than a child’s safety,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “Please slow down, pay attention, obey speed limits and stop for school buses so everyone can make it to where they are headed safely.”
