SBSO RECOGNIZES NATIONAL SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER DAY

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is proud to recognize February 15 as National School Resource Officer (SRO) Appreciation Day, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Established by the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) in 2022, this day highlights the vital role SROs play in keeping our schools safe and fostering strong relationships between law enforcement and students.

Sheriff Pohlmann said several members of SBSO’s Special Investigations Division play pivotal roles as SROs within our schools.

SROs are stationed at Chalmette High School and C.F. Rowley Alternative School, working alongside administrators and faculty to ensure these campuses remain safe places for students to learn and grow.

“Our dedicated SROs do more than just provide security though – they serve as mentors, educators, and trusted role models for the students of St. Bernard Parish,” the Sheriff said.

In addition to monitoring school grounds, deterring unauthorized individuals from entering campus, and addressing student concerns as they arise, they work to promote a positive image of law enforcement, educate students about safety and the law, and respond to crises when needed.

“Their commitment, compassion, and dedication make a lasting impact on our schools and the community as a whole,” Sheriff Pohlmann said.

SRO’s stationed at CHS are Lt. Marco Spicuzza, Dep. Brandon Gaudet and Dep. Jamie Lovas, and C.F. Rowley’s SROs are Sgt. Henry Senez and Lt. Jamie Penton.
Providing support to our SROs are SBSO liaison investigator Lt. Michelle Canepa, SRO Truancy Dep. Keith Lutz, and Drug Abuse Resistance Education instructor Sgt. Brandon Lewis.

Lt. Canepa is responsible for investigating incidents on school campuses, building positive relationships with students, and providing safety and prevention educational opportunities for students, parents, and school staff.

Dep. Lutz works to promote school attendance, monitoring and addressing cases of students who are regularly absent without a valid reason, and Sgt. Lewis assists our SROs on campus outside of his duties with the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.

Maj. Daniel Bostic, commander of the Special Investigations Division and supervisor of SROs, said these deputies play a crucial role in school safety and youth mentorship.

“Our SROs do more than protect our schools – they build trust, serve as role models, and create positive connections between law enforcement and students,” Maj Bostic said. “We appreciate their dedication to keeping our schools and children safe.”

Please join us in thanking our SROs for their dedication and service to our community and our youth.
