SBSO RECEIVES SENSORY BAGS FROM AUTISM KREWE
The St Bernard Autism Awareness Krewe recently presented sensory bags to the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office and the St. Bernard Parish Fire Department to assist first responders when encountering individuals with autism or other sensory sensitivities during emergency situations.
Sheriff James Pohlmann said the department is honored to receive the bags and grateful for the continued partnership with community organizations like the Krewe, who are dedicated to inclusivity and advocacy.
“These sensory bags are a thoughtful and practical resource that can make a real difference in the field,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “They can help de-escalate stressful encounters and provide comfort to individuals who may be overwhelmed in certain situations.”
According to Sgt. Jeffrey Vega, a detective with the Criminal Investigations Bureau and Autism Krewe board member, each bag is filled with items designed to help calm or distract individuals who experience sensory overload. Items may include noise-reducing headphones, fidget toys, and other tools that can assist with communication and self-regulation.
By equipping first responders with sensory bags, Sgt. Vega said the Krewe hopes to promote greater understanding and preparedness when it comes to supporting neurodiverse individuals throughout the parish.
The bags will be placed in patrol units and emergency response vehicles, ensuring they are readily available when needed.
The St. Bernard Autism Awareness Krewe has long been committed to raising awareness, fostering education, and building connections within the parish to better support those on the autism spectrum and their families.
