SBSO RECEIVES MARITIME NAVIGATIONAL TECH TRAINING

Sheriff James Pohlmann and members of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office received training this week in a state-of-the-art maritime navigational technology system.

The Sheriff, along with members of the Marine Division and Special Weapons And Tactics Team, spent the day Tuesday in the eastern part of the parish learning about how new navigational tools can help them do their jobs even more efficiently.

Glenn Schurr, a well-known fixture of the Louisiana fishing and maritime community and founder of Standard Mapping Services since 1984, donated his time to showcase for the Sheriff’s Office how their digital mapping system can aid deputies in search and rescue efforts should the need arise.

“We are happy to partner with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office and confident that our Aerial Imaging will give the deputies the visual precision they need to navigate effortlessly on Louisiana’s waterways,” Schurr said. “The Standard Mapping Team has been providing aerial mapping for over 40 years and continues to find new innovations for navigational solutions which proves to be invaluable for all boaters.”

The Sheriff said the high-definition imaging can be used as an important life-saving tool by first responders.

“We get calls for service on our waterways year-round, not just during hurricane season,” the Sheriff said. “This type of technology can help us quickly locate a stranded or injured boater, as well as during any type of high-water event.”

Following an instructional training session on land, deputies were able to implement what they learned from Schurr by using the technology to run several scenarios on local waterways.

With the start of hurricane season tomorrow, the Sheriff said this type of training is timely and always pertinent to an area like ours that is surrounded by water.

“The Sheriff’s Office trains year-round for any type of rain event flooding and in case a tropical system threatens our area, causes flooding or possibly forces the evacuation of the parish,” he said. “We are thankful to have had Glenn donate his time to helping our deputies learn to use this technology so we can further our ability to keep our residents and visitors to our parish waterways safe.”
