SBSO RECEIVES DONATION FROM MERAUX FOUNDATION TO ENHANCE BIKE PATH SAFETY

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office recently received a $16,800 donation from the Meraux Foundation to place cameras along local bike paths in an effort to enhance public safety and deter criminal activity, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

The project is a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office, the Meraux Foundation, Project NOLA and St. Bernard Parish Government.

Sheriff Pohlmann said he is thankful for the Meraux Foundation for their generous and impactful contribution towards enhancing community safety.

“Their unwavering support will enable the installation of crucial crime cameras along our local bike trails, empowering us to create a safer and more secure environment for all residents,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “This is just the latest example of how we are working together to create a stronger and safer community for everyone to enjoy.”

Rita Gue, president of the Meraux Foundation, said they are happy to invest in St. Bernard’s bike trails and public safety.

“We’re grateful to Sheriff Pohlmann and his officers, and we’re glad to provide funds to help keep our community safe,” Gue said.

The crime cameras will be connected by a wireless network and will be installed at key locations selected by the Sheriff’s Office along bike trails. They are being made available through the community-based crime camera nonprofit organization Project NOLA.

The Meraux Foundation has been a major supporter of plans for a network of bike trails in St. Bernard, which includes the 14-mile Mississippi River Trail, which opened in December, the 26-mile 40 Arpent Trail, and others. The Meraux Foundation has donated land and funds to the initiative, and it donated the land for the 40 Arpent Wetlands Observatory.
