SBSO PREPARES FOR 2025 HURRICANE SEASON

With the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season underway, St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlmann is urging residents to make preparations now in case a storm threatens our area.

“Hurricane season runs June 1 through Nov. 30, and with our proximity to the Gulf, we must stay prepared,” Sheriff Pohlmann said.

The Sheriff’s Office trains year-round for emergencies, including flooding and storm evacuations. SWAT team members train with Marine Division boats, and the agency is equipped with a high-water vehicle for rescues and transport. Departments also have contingency plans ready to activate if needed.

“If the parish orders an evacuation, we’ll assist and then lock down to protect property and prevent re-entry by non-residents,” Sheriff Pohlmann said.

He emphasized that families should finalize their own plans now – don’t wait until a storm is approaching. Know where you’ll go, what you’ll bring, and how you’ll care for pets and vulnerable family members.

“Don’t stay behind out of fear your home might be burglarized,” the Sheriff said. “We’ll patrol neighborhoods and waterways to keep your property safe.”

Sheriff Pohlmann also encourages residents to avoid the last-minute rush by stocking up now on essentials like water, flashlights, batteries, and medications.

Residents needing evacuation assistance, including those with special needs, should register with Homeland Security by calling (504) 278-4268 or visiting sbpg.net.
