SBSO PARTNERS WITH PARISH GOVERNMENT TO ENHANCE TRAIL SAFETY
The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office has partnered with St. Bernard Parish Government to enhance safety along the parish’s bikeways and trails, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
“These pathways are valuable community assets for our residents to enjoy,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “By working together, we’re helping ensure these spaces remain safe and accessible for everyone who uses them.”
As part of the initiative, more than a dozen surveillance cameras have been installed along the trail system and at parish pumping stations, and a new trail safety and rules sign has been placed at the entrance to the 40 Arpent Wetlands Observatory, 8201 Benjamin St. in Chalmette, near the north end of Jean Lafitte Parkway.
The sign reminds users to share the trail responsibly, obey speed limits and parking restrictions, keep pets under control, respect the environment, and note that the trails are under 24-hour video surveillance by the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Pohlmann also encourages users to stay aware of their surroundings, avoid distractions, supervise children, ride at safe speeds, and wear a properly fitted helmet when riding a bicycle, scooter, or e-bike.
Col. Chad Clark, commander of the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau, said the enhanced camera network provides another layer of security for those using the trails.
“The cameras have been strategically placed along the trails to help deter criminal activity and provide investigators with valuable evidence when incidents occur,” Col. Clark said. “Our goal is not only to solve crimes but to help prevent them and give trail users added peace of mind.”
The surveillance cameras were made possible through a generous donation from the Meraux Foundation, whose continued support helps strengthen public safety initiatives throughout St. Bernard Parish.
The St. Bernard Parish Bikeways and Trails network includes more than 100 miles of completed bikeways for walking, running, and bicycling, including the Mississippi River Trail, the 40 Arpent Trail, the Jean Lafitte Trail, and numerous on-street bikeways connecting neighborhoods, parks, schools, businesses, and other community destinations. Additional trail projects are currently under development.
