SBSO PARTICIPATES IN ROTARY SPELLING BEE
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office participated in the 26th Annual Rotary Club Corporate Spelling Bee held Feb. 5 in the Chalmette High School cafeteria, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
The Sheriff’s Office team was composed of from left: Special Operations Division Administrative Assistant Lauryn Beckwith, Public Information Officer Kim Gritter and Chaplain Dep. Aaron Johnson.
The PBF Energy Chalmette Refining team took home bragging rights as the event’s best spellers and first place winners for the second year in a row. Second place went to Gulf Coast Bank & Trust Company, and a team from the St. Bernard School Board took third place.
Each year, for a $350 donation, teams of three people from local businesses, organizations and public offices are invited by the Rotary Club to participate in a fun competition and help raise money for a worthy cause that benefits parish school children. Refreshments are sold, and there are raffles and door prizes.
Other teams who participated included: Classic Collision, Nunez Community College Foundation, St. Bernard Retired Teachers, Mel Malone/State Farm Insurance Agency, Meraux Foundation, Dominique You Lodge, St. Bernard Parish Government, Blue Williams LLC, Judge Billy McGoey, and Team Scharfenstein.
This year’s Spelling Bee was once again dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. Les Scharfenstein, a long-time educator and member of the Rotary Club.
