SBSO PARTICIPATES IN INTERNET SAFETY PRESENTATION

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), recently participated in Project iGuardian, an informative presentation designed to educate parents, guardians and community members about internet safety for children.

Sheriff James Pohlmann said community engagement is imperative in safeguarding children in today’s digital world.

“Protecting our children from online dangers requires a united effort,” the Sheriff said. “By working together as a community, we can provide parents and guardians with the knowledge and tools they need to keep our kids safe in the digital age.”

Held on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at Nunez Community College in Chalmette, the free event featured experienced speakers, including Maj. Daniel Bostic, commander of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Division; Lt. Michelle Canepa, the Sheriff’s Office school liaison investigator; Community Relations Officer Lisa Maher from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Partnership and Engagement in New Orleans; and Child Welfare and Attendance Supervisor Andrea Licciardi for the St. Bernard Parish School Board.

Maj. Bostic and Lt. Canepa shared their experiences from working closely with the St. Bernard Parish School System to ensure the safety of students.

Project iGuardian, a national program led by HSI, focused on topics such as tactics used by online predators, sextortion, privacy risks from digital devices, and emerging online platforms. Attendees gained valuable insights and practical tools to help protect children from becoming victims of cybercrimes.
