SBSO OPENS REGISTRATION FOR JUNIOR DEPUTY PROGRAM
Looking for a summer experience that’s more than just fun and games?
The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office is once again giving local youth the chance to step into the world of law enforcement, build confidence, and learn what it means to serve their community.
Registration is now open for the Sheriff’s Office’s annual Junior Deputy Academy, a hands-on program designed for St. Bernard Parish children ages 10 to 12. Participation is free. Space is limited.
The Junior Deputy Academy will be held June 1 through 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office Training Center, 2118 Jackson Blvd. in Chalmette.
Parents interested in registering their child can contact Lt. Eric Eilers or Chaplain Dep. Aaron Johnson at (504) 278-7628.
Established in 2015, Sheriff James Pohlmann said the program is focused on developing responsible, confident young leaders while giving them a behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement.
“Our Junior Deputy Academy offers the perfect balance of education and fun,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “It’s designed to build confidence while teaching kids the importance of respect – for themselves, their community, and those who serve it.”
Modeled after the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Police Academy for adults, the program gives participants the opportunity to interact with deputies from multiple divisions, including Patrol, Traffic, Corrections, Communications, Narcotics, Marine, and Criminal Investigations.
The program includes tours of the St. Bernard Parish Correctional Facility, equipment demonstrations, and firearm safety instruction at a local shooting range, along with a variety of engaging, hands-on activities.
Students will receive Junior Deputy T-shirts, badges, and certificates of completion. The program will conclude with a graduation ceremony on June 5 at Docville in Meraux.
