SBSO OPENS LOUISIANA CRAWFISH FESTIVAL

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is geared up and ready as the Knights of Columbus kicks off its 51st Louisiana Crawfish Festival tonight.

Sheriff James Pohlmann said deputies opened the fair at 5 p.m., kicking off a coordinated, round-the-clock presence on the grounds and in surrounding neighborhoods throughout the weekend.

“Our goal is for everyone to come out, enjoy the festival, and have a safe and positive experience,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “We encourage the public to remain aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to deputies on site.”

The festival, which features live music, food booths, rides and local crafts vendors, is being held on the grounds between the St. Bernard Parish Government Complex and the Frederick J. Sigur Civic Center, 8245 W. Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette.
Festival hours are: today and Friday from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.

In addition to the law enforcement presence, Sheriff Pohlmann said the Sheriff’s Office has implemented enhanced safety measures this year, including additional camera systems installed by the agency’s IT Department under the direction of IT Commander Maj. Daniel Doucet to monitor activity in and around the festival area.

Col. Daniel Bostic Jr., commander of the Special Investigations Division and coordinator of security operations on festival grounds, said the unified efforts and added technology are key to maintaining safety throughout the festival.

“With added technology and real-time monitoring, we’re able to stay proactive, respond quickly, and keep things running smoothly throughout the weekend,” Col. Bostic said.

There will only be two entrances to the festival: on the Jean Lafitte Parkway side and near the rear of the Government Complex parking lot.

Motorists traveling in the area should expect increased traffic and are asked to use caution and allow extra time when passing through nearby roadways.

Festival organizers remind attendees that all guests will pass through metal detectors and bag checks. Only clear bags (12” x 6” x 12”) or small clutch purses (4” x 6.5”) are permitted, and all bags are subject to search. Outside food and drinks are not allowed, no weapons are permitted, and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
