SBSO NEW 9-1-1 DISPATCHERS

Two St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office deputies recently completed the necessary training required to become 9-1-1 dispatchers, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Dep. Leighann Armand, right, and Dep. Melissa Pedigo both completed the Communications Division’s dispatcher training program and are now fully trained to handle calls that come into the 9-1-1 center.

Deputies training to become 9-1-1 dispatchers receive extensive hands-on instruction while working 12-hour shifts. Training consists of four phases, with each phase lasting up to two months. Following each phase, deputies are given quizzes they must pass before moving on to the next phase and a written test is given at the end of phase four.

Once training is completed, dispatchers answer incoming non-emergency and emergency calls made to the 9-1-1 center, and also relay information to deputies in the field, as well as other first-responder agencies like the fire department and emergency medical services.

Dispatchers often are required to give life saving instructions to the person in need before emergency services arrive. They must have good communication skills, be able to multi-task and possess the ability to work under stressful conditions in order to provide quick responses to emergency situations.

In addition, dispatchers are responsible for monitoring and tracking the status of deputies at all times to insure their safety as well.

If you would like to make a difference in your community and you think you have what it takes to become a 9-1-1 dispatcher, the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is actively accepting applications for our Communications Division.
