SBSO MOURNS LOSS OF FORMER DEPUTY, COMMUNITY LEADER

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Gus Riess, a former deputy with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, who died overnight at the age of 86. Born and raised in St. Bernard Parish, he was a lifelong resident who dedicated much of his life to serving the community he loved so dearly.

Mr. Gus proudly served with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office for many years, beginning in 1965 under former Sheriff John F. “Jack” Rowley, and later under former Sheriffs Ralph McDougall and Jack Stephens, retiring in 1998 as a deputy in the Juvenile Detention Center.

In addition, he formerly served the parish as a Police Jury member and Justice of the Peace, and was a longtime employee of Gulf Coast Bank and Trust, where he held the position of St. Bernard Parish Market President.

He was also deeply involved in the community through his work with the Rotary Club of St. Bernard, the Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi, the St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce, and the St. Bernard Economic Development Commission.

A graduate of Holy Cross School and Louisiana State University, Mr. Gus was a member of LSU’s 1958 National Championship football team – an accomplishment he carried with pride throughout his life and often spoke of fondly.

“Gus served St. Bernard Parish with integrity and dedication, both in law enforcement and throughout his many years of civic service,” Sheriff James Pohlmann said. “His contributions helped shape this community, and he will be sadly missed by me and many others.”

Sheriff Pohlmann and the men and women of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office offer their thoughts and prayers to Mr. Gus’s family, colleagues and friends during this difficult time.
