SBSO MARINE DIVISION RESCUES BOATERS

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Marine Division rescued an adult male and female whose boat took on water this morning around 9 a.m. during a recreational fishing trip out of Shell Beach, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Capt. Brian Clark and Lt. Shane Lulei said conditions on the water became rough this morning and the couple’s boat was pushed into the rocks near Fort Beauregard and began to take on water.

Capt. Clark said the fact that both adults were wearing life jackets played a pivotal role in them being able to survive until help arrived on the scene to perform the rescue.

The man and woman were both safely returned to the Campo’s Marina.

Sheriff Pohlmann wants to remind residents of the importance of practicing safety while on the water.

“Everyone aboard a vessel should have a life jacket available to them, and it is mandatory for anyone under the age of 17 to have it on,” the Sheriff said. “They are inexpensive and easily available at sporting goods and department stores. It could save your life.”
