SBSO MARINE DIVISION ASSISTS WITH CHS 4-H MANGROVE PROJECT

Members of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Marine Division recently helped transport 17 Chalmette High School 4-H students to Gardner Island, where the students planted 338 black mangrove trees as part of an ongoing coastal restoration and environmental education project.

Capt. Brian Clark, who oversees the Marine Division, along with Lt. Shane Lulei and Dep. Dusty Gould, assisted with transporting students by boat to the marsh area, where the mangroves were planted to help reduce coastal erosion and improve salt marsh habitat.

The project is part of the St. Bernard Parish 4-H Black Mangrove Project, which allows students to grow mangrove propagules collected locally before transplanting the saplings into coastal marsh areas.

Sheriff James Pohlmann praised the students for their efforts to help protect Louisiana’s coast and thanked his Marine Division deputies for assisting with the project.

“We were proud to assist these students and be part of such an important project,” the Sheriff said.
