SBSO LT. GARY NORIEA GRADUATES FROM FBI NATIONAL ACADEMY

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce Lt. Gary Noriea’s graduation from the 297th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Internationally recognized for its rigorous academic and physical training, the FBI’s 10-week academy provides advanced instruction in leadership, communication, and fitness. Participants are selected based on exemplary professional records, typically possess extensive law enforcement experience, and often return to serve in executive roles within their agencies.

Sheriff Pohlmann, a graduate of the FBI National Academy’s 181st session, commended Lt. Noriea on his graduation.

“This accomplishment is a reflection of Lt. Noriea’s dedication to serving the people of St. Bernard Parish,” the Sheriff said. “I’m confident that the knowledge and experience he gained will continue to benefit our agency and the community.”

Col. Walter Dornan, commander of the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division and Lt. Noriea’s supervisor, also praised his achievement.

“Lt. Noriea leads by example every day, and this accomplishment speaks to the type of leader he is,” Col. Dornan said. “We’re proud to have him representing our division and confident he will continue to make a positive impact.”

Lt. Noriea attended the academy from Jan. 7 through his March 18 graduation, training alongside 252 officers from 48 states, the District of Columbia, 24 countries, and four military organizations.

Courses are taught by University of Virginia faculty and FBI instructors and include both academic and physical training components, as well as collaborative forums with law enforcement leaders from around the world.

While attending the academy, Lt. Noriea completed coursework in legal issues impacting law enforcement operations, wellness and resilience, critical incident leadership and decision-making, crisis negotiations, conflict resolution, and fitness for law enforcement.

He also successfully completed the program’s physical components, which include weekly challenges and the “Yellow Brick Road,” a grueling 6.1-mile Marine-designed obstacle course that participants must finish to earn a commemorative yellow brick.

An 18-year law enforcement veteran, Lt. Noriea has dedicated his entire career to the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office. He began his service in 2008 in the Corrections Division at the Parish Prison before transferring to the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division. He later served in the Narcotics Division and eventually returned to Patrol.

He has also been a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) team for more than a decade and contributes to the Marine Division and Motorcycle Unit. In addition, he is a certified drone pilot.

Lt. Noriea said he was honored to attend the academy and grateful for the opportunity.

“I’m honored and grateful to Sheriff Pohlmann for allowing me to attend such a prestigious national academy,” he said. “I look forward to applying what I’ve learned and sharing that knowledge with the next generation of law enforcement.”

Noriea, other members of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, both active and retired, who are FBI National Academy graduates include: Deputy Chief John Doran, Deputy Chief John Vickers, Col.
