SBSO LOOKING FOR RESERVE DIVISION DEPUTIES

Have you ever felt a calling to do something positive for your community that will make a difference? Then you should consider volunteering as a St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division Deputy.

Reserve Division deputies are volunteer officers who generously donate their time to support and enhance public safety across the parish. While unpaid, these individuals become commissioned law enforcement officers who receive the same level of training and hold the same responsibilities as paid patrol deputies.

Sheriff James Pohlmann said Reserve deputies play an essential role in the department.

“Our Reserve Division deputies may be volunteers, but they’re an indispensable part of our team,” the Sheriff said. “They work with our full-time deputies to help protect and serve our community, and we’re grateful for the dedication they show day in and day out.”

Lt. Chris Scheeler oversees the Reserve Division and says Reserve deputies regularly step in to assist during large events such as parades, festivals, and sporting events. They also patrol around local businesses during the busy holiday shopping season.

Prior law enforcement experience is not required.

“We send Reserve deputies to the Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) police academy where they are trained in all aspects of law enforcement, including firearms use, investigation and patrol procedures, and physical fitness,” Lt. Scheeler said. ‘“We give them the tools and training to succeed.”

The only requirements to apply are as follows:

⭐Reside in St. Bernard Parish
⭐Be at least 21 years old
⭐Have a high school diploma or GED
⭐Be able to pass a criminal background check

Lt. Scheeler said there have been many former Reserve deputies who found the experience so rewarding they went on to pursue a full-time law enforcement career with SBSO.

If you’re ready to step up and make a difference, contact Lt. Scheeler at (504) 278-7634 or cscheeler@sbso.org for more information.
