SBSO ‘Keeping Our Schools Safe’

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office headed back to school this week along with your children and are ready to keep them safe during the 2023-24 school year, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Several members of the Special Investigations Division will once again play pivotal roles within our schools.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education deputies Capt. Lisa Jackson and Sgt. Darrin Miller will work with parish fifth-graders through our D.A.R.E. anti-drug program which is aimed at discouraging youngsters from using drugs, including tobacco and alcohol, or taking part in violence or bullying of others.

Several School Resource Officers, under the direction of Maj. Daniel Bostic and Capt. Jackson, will keep a watchful eye over students on the Chalmette High School and C.F. Rowley Alternative School campuses. They include: Lt. Marco Spicuzza, Dep. Jamie Lovas, Dep. Jamie Penton, Dep. Henry Senez and Dep. Keith Lutz.

These deputies work with school administrators and faculty members to ensure these schools are safe places for students to learn and prosper. They provide a highly visible presence to deter or identify trespassers on campus and they address concerns that may arise within the student body.

In addition to having a presence within the schools, the Sheriff’s Office liaison investigator Lt. Michelle Canepa also will be the lead detective responsible for conducting investigations about any incidents that take place on school campuses.

She also will work to build positive relationships with students and facilitate educational opportunities for students, parents, school staff and school administrators regarding various safety prevention measures.

Nearly a dozen Crossing Guard’s are will be on duty managing traffic safety at our parish schools during arrival and dismissal times.

These men and women are authorized to stop the flow of traffic in designated school zones to help children safely cross the street and ensure buses arrive and depart on time. Their purpose is to remind drivers of the presence of pedestrians near school crosswalks so everyone stays safe.

Sheriff Pohlmann wishes everyone a safe, happy and successful school year!
