⭐️SBSO JUNIOR DEPUTY ACADEMY⭐️

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office kicked off its annual Junior Deputy Academy summer program this week with nearly 30 children in attendance, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Formed in 2015, the Junior Deputy Academy is open to St. Bernard Parish children ages 10 to 13.

Patterned after the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Police Academy for adults, the program is designed to foster community pride and self esteem, while teaching youngsters about the various aspects of law enforcement.

This week, participants heard about the types of calls received by 9-1-1 dispatchers in Communications, what kinds of things Patrol Division deputies encounter while on patrol, and what roles the Traffic and Motorcycle Divisions have within the department.

Junior Deputies also talked with Narcotics Division agents about the dangers of using drugs and alcohol, they took a trip to the parish jail and the Fire Department showed them some of the tools they use to fight fires. They also visited with John Rahaim, St. Bernard Parish’s Director of Homeland Security, about hurricane preparedness.

Members of the Marine Division spoke to the kids about water safety and the importance of wearing flotation devices, and detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau taught them crime scene investigation skills.

Next week, the Junior Deputies will learn firearm safety at the shooting range, get to check out some of the state-of-the-art equipment deputies use and will visit with a Louisiana State Trooper.

The Junior Deputy Program is being held three days a week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, for a two-week period from June 20 to June 29, at the Sheriff’s Office Training Center, on the second floor at 2118 Jackson Blvd. in Chalmette, immediately behind the Parish Courthouse.

Classes are taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a graduation ceremony is set for June 29 at noon at Docville Farms, 5124 E. St. Bernard Highway in Violet.

The program is led by Lt. Eric Eilers, head of community relations, and Dep. Aaron Johnson, who also serves as chaplain.
