SBSO INVESTIGATING DEATH OF 16-YEAR-OLD IN VIOLET

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 16-year-old male in Violet, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

On Monday, March 16, at approximately 9 p.m., deputies responded to a call for service in reference to a person lying in the roadway in the 2200 block of Meraux Lane in Violet.

When deputies arrived on scene, they came into contact with a male who was on the ground and in distress. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.

During the course of the investigation, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau determined through video surveillance that as the victim was walking along Meraux Lane, he approached a white Chevrolet van, at which point an altercation occurred. The driver then attempted to flee the scene.

During this time, the victim and driver remained in physical contact through the driver-side window. As the vehicle departed, the victim was dragged, fell to the roadway and was subsequently run over.

Detectives were able to identify the driver of the van as a 15-year-old male who has since been taken into custody and booked with negligent homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death.

The investigation is ongoing, the Sheriff said.
