SBSO INVESTIGATING ATTEMPTED CARJACKING AND AUTO THEFT

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is investigating two incidents that occurred in Chalmette Tuesday evening involving an attempted carjacking and an auto theft involving a small child, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, shortly before 7 p.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies responded to a call for service in reference to an attempted carjacking near Buffon Street and East St. Bernard Highway.

The incident was thwarted when the victims fled in their vehicle from two male perpetrators occupying a silver 2019 Kia SUV.

Minutes later, the Sheriff said, deputies received a second call in reference to a black 2019 Acura TL occupied by a small child being stolen outside a business in the 2000 block of Paris Road in Chalmette.

Criminal Investigations Bureau detectives spotted the Acura traveling at a high rate of speed heading out of the parish and followed it into eastern New Orleans, assuming the child was still inside.

Detectives attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Shortly after deputies located the 6-year-old girl alone and in good health inside the Kia which was abandoned by the suspects earlier near Delille and Moreau Streets in Chalmette.

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned the Kia was listed as stolen out of New Orleans.

The investigation is ongoing, the Sheriff said.
