SBSO INTERIM SHERIFF RICHARD BAUMY SWORN IN
Richard Baumy has been sworn in as interim Sheriff of St. Bernard Parish, officially assuming office today, Nov. 1, 2026.
The Honorable Judge Eric Bopp administered the oath of office to Sheriff Baumy, who succeeds Sheriff James Pohlmann following his retirement after 43 years of service to the agency and the residents of St. Bernard.
Sheriff Baumy brings more than six decades of law enforcement experience to the position, including 42 years with the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office. He served as Chief Deputy under Sheriff Pohlmann for the past 14 years and will lead the agency until a special election is held.
“I am honored to serve this community as interim Sheriff and continue working to protect the people who call St. Bernard home,” Sheriff Baumy said. “Sheriff Pohlmann built a well-run Sheriff’s Office supported by experienced leadership and dedicated deputies and employees.”
Sheriff Baumy began his law enforcement career with the New Orleans Police Department in 1965, serving for 19 years before retiring in 1984 as deputy commander of the homicide unit.
On July 1, 1984, he joined the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office as commander of the Field Operations Patrol Division. During his 42 years with the agency, he has helped oversee daily operations and advance its public safety mission.
“I have been closely involved in the day-to-day operations of the Sheriff’s Office for more than four decades,” he said. “I know this agency and its personnel very well, and I am committed to ensuring a seamless transition.”
Supporting Sheriff Baumy will be Chief Deputy John Doran, who was also sworn in by Judge Bopp. Chief Doran previously served as Deputy Chief for Sheriff Pohlmann and began his career with the Sheriff’s Office in 1986. He brings 40 years of experience to his new role.
Under Sheriff Baumy’s leadership, Chief Deputy Doran and the existing command staff will continue overseeing daily operations. Nearly every member of the command staff has 30 or more years of law enforcement experience and a longstanding commitment to serving and protecting St. Bernard Parish.
“I look forward to this new chapter and the opportunity to lead the men and women I have worked alongside for so many years,” Sheriff Baumy said. “My focus will be on building upon Sheriff Pohlmann’s work and continuing our commitment to ‘Keeping St. Bernard Safe.’”
Congratulations, Sheriff Baumy and Chief Deputy Doran, as you begin this new chapter of service to St. Bernard Parish!🖤💙🫡
