SBSO HONORS FALLEN HEROES

Several St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office deputies were among the many volunteers at Chalmette National Cemetery early this morning placing hundreds of flags at the gravesites of fallen soldiers in honor of Monday being Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May.

Established in 1864, Chalmette National Cemetery is one of the oldest national cemeteries in the United States.

Located in Chalmette on a parcel of land along the banks of the Mississippi River, the cemetery is an integral part of both the history of New Orleans and of the nation.

Adjacent to Chalmette Battlefield where the Battle of New Orleans and the final battle of the War of 1812 was fought, the cemetery serves as the final resting place for soldiers from various conflicts throughout American history, from the War of 1812, the Civil War, and the Vietnam War.
