SBSO HOLDS ‘REFUSE TO BE A VICTIM’ CLASS

Being prepared can make all the difference – and about two dozen residents took that step during the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office “Refuse To Be A Victim” class held Tuesday, April 14 at the Sheriff’s Training Center in Chalmette, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

The free class, led by Lt. Eric Eilers, director of community relations, and Chaplain Dep. Aaron Johnson, focused on practical ways to help individuals better protect themselves, their families and their homes.

Col. Chad Clark, commander of the Criminal Investigations Bureau, also spoke to attendees about recent scams targeting residents and the number of cases investigators handle each year, reinforcing the importance of staying alert and informed.

Lt. Robert Garofalo, a detective with CIB, also spoke on some of the new trends in social media scams, including fake rental listings with scammers using videos and online posts to advertise fake properties and collect deposits through cash apps.

Participants also learned how to reduce their risk of becoming a target, with guidance on effective locks, camera systems, special lighting, and other home security measures, along with tips on recognizing potential threats early and avoiding dangerous encounters.

“Refuse To Be A Victim,” a nationally recognized program founded in 1993, equips residents with simple, effective strategies to stay aware, prepared and less vulnerable to crime.
