SBSO HOLDS D.A.R.E. GRADUATIONS
Several hundred St. Bernard Parish fifth-graders recently graduated from the spring semester of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.
Graduation ceremonies were recently held for students at Arabi Elementary, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, J.F. Gauthier Elementary and Arlene Meraux Elementary.
Sheriff James Pohlmann said the D.A.R.E. anti-drug program, taught in St. Bernard Parish schools by program supervisor Capt. Lisa Jackson and Sgt. Brandon Lewis, is aimed at discouraging youngsters from using drugs, including tobacco and alcohol, and from taking part in violence or bullying.
During the graduation ceremonies, students heard from Sheriff Pohlmann and Col. Daniel Bostic Jr., commander of the Special Investigations Division, about making the right choices when it comes to drugs and alcohol. They stressed the importance of listening to parents and teachers and choosing friends wisely. They also encouraged students not to bully others and to report any bullying they witness to a trusted adult or teacher.
Sheriff Pohlmann also addressed parents in attendance about the importance of protecting the future by investing in children. He praised parents for helping keep their children on the right path and focused on doing the right thing by talking with them often and recognizing warning signs that could help prevent drug use.
