SBSO HOLDING REGISTRATION FOR JUNIOR DEPUTY PROGRAM
Are you a parent of a 10- to 12-year-old residing in St. Bernard Parish, searching for an engaging and enriching summer activity where they can acquire essential skills for responsible citizenship and ethical conduct?
If yes, the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office invites you to enroll your child in its annual Junior Deputy Academy, now open for registration.
Established in 2015, Sheriff James Pohlmann said the Junior Deputy program aims to instill community pride and confidence in young boys and girls while educating them about various facets of law enforcement.
“Our Junior Deputy Academy offers children a blend of learning about law enforcement and fun,” the Sheriff said. “It’s tailored to nurture their self-esteem and respect for themselves, their community, and law enforcement personnel.”
Modeled after the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Police Academy for adults, the Junior Deputy Academy will be held June 2 through 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office Training Center, 2118 Jackson Blvd. in Chalmette.
Parents interested in registering their children for the Junior Deputy Academy can reach out to Lt. Eric Eilers or Chaplain Aaron Johnson at (504) 278-7628. Registration spots are limited.
The program, overseen by Lt. Eilers and Chaplain Johnson, encompasses visits from deputies across various divisions of the Sheriff’s Office, including Patrol, Narcotics, Marine, and Criminal Investigations.
Activities include tours of the St. Bernard Parish Prison, demonstrations of departmental equipment, and firearm safety instruction at a local shooting range.
Participants will receive Junior Deputy T-shirts and badges, and a graduation ceremony will be held on June 6.
