SBSO HELPS CAPTURE ESCAPEE DERRICK GROVES
Sheriff James Pohlmann is pleased to announce that the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office played an essential role in the successful capture of 28-year-old Derrick Groves today (Oct. 8) in Atlanta, Georgia, following a brief stand-off with Atlanta police.
Members of the SBSO Special Investigations Division Narcotics Unit assisted in the extensive, multi-agency operation that included Crimestoppers Greater New Orleans, the United States Marshals Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, the Louisiana State Police, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, the New Orleans Police Department, the Atlanta Police Department.
Groves, a convicted murderer, was one of ten inmates who escaped from the Orleans Parish Prison on May 16, 2025, prompting a months-long manhunt. Law enforcement agencies have worked tirelessly since his escape to locate and apprehend him.
Sheriff Pohlmann praised the work of his deputies, noting that their efforts directly led to Groves’ capture. He also emphasized that strong partnerships with other agencies are essential to keeping communities safe.
“I’m extremely proud of these deputies for their hard work and dedication, and for going above and beyond in their collaboration with our law enforcement partners to ensure justice was served,” the Sheriff said. “It’s an honor to lead a team that works so hard to protect not only St. Bernard Parish, but also our neighboring communities.”
