SBSO GETS READY FOR A SAFE HALLOWEEN
As ghosts, goblins, and little ghouls get ready to fill the streets, Sheriff James Pohlmann assures residents that the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is committed to keeping Halloween safe and fun by increasing patrols and sharing important safety reminders.
As in previous years, deputies will ramp up DWI and traffic enforcement on highways and in neighborhoods beginning the weekend before Halloween and continuing through Friday, Oct. 31. The increased presence aims to protect trick-or-treaters and those attending Halloween events.
“We’re asking drivers to slow down, stay alert, and watch for pedestrians,” Sheriff Pohlmann said.
Motorists should also be mindful of roadblocks or barricades in neighborhoods and are reminded never to move or bypass them, he added.
Parents are encouraged to remain vigilant about where their children go while trick-or-treating and ensure they stay in groups. It’s also important to inspect all treats before allowing children to eat them.
If anything appears suspicious, do not touch it – call 9-1-1 immediately. For non-emergency concerns, call (504) 271-2501.
Additional Halloween Safety Tips:
🎃 Remind children never to enter a stranger’s home and to avoid eating treats until they’re checked at home.
🎃 Choose bright, reflective costumes. Keep hems short to prevent tripping, and add reflective tape for visibility.
🎃 Look for flame-resistant labels on costumes, wigs, and accessories.
🎃 Secure your child’s emergency information (name, address, phone number) discreetly inside their costume or on a bracelet.
🎃 Opt for face paint or makeup instead of masks, which can obstruct vision.
🎃 Equip each child with a flashlight or battery-powered lantern.
🎃 Always trick-or-treat in groups with a responsible adult present.
🎃 Ensure children know a parent’s phone number and how to call 9-1-1 if needed.
🎃 Visit only well-lit homes in familiar neighborhoods with porch lights on.
🎃 Keep pets secured indoors to prevent excitement or accidental escapes when trick-or-treaters arrive.
