SBSO DEPUTIES PLAY VITAL ROLE IN PARISH SCHOOLS
Keeping students safe takes more than locked doors and security plans. It takes people who know the schools, know the students and are there each day to protect, guide and build trust.
With the 2026-27 school year underway, the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is highlighting the important role its deputies play throughout parish schools as protectors, mentors and trusted members of the school community, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
This school year also marks a new beginning for the St. Bernard Parish Public Schools under Superintendent Mary Lumetta.
“We look forward to working with Superintendent Lumetta and her administration,” the Sheriff said. “We share the same goal – making sure our students have a safe environment where they can learn, grow and succeed.”
Sheriff’s Office deputies serve in a variety of roles throughout parish schools, including School Resource Officers, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) instructors, an investigative liaison and deputies who assist with attendance and residency matters. School crossing guards also are stationed at each school during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.
The Sheriff’s Office also works closely with school administrators to develop and review emergency response plans, while deputies familiarize themselves with school layouts and procedures to help ensure a quick, coordinated response during a crisis.
Col. Daniel Bostic Jr., commander of the Special Investigations Division who oversees deputies working in school settings, said their role goes beyond providing a visible security presence.
“Their purpose isn’t just about enforcing rules; it’s about showing students that law enforcement can be a source of support and guidance,” Col. Bostic said. “They help students feel seen, heard and safe, and that kind of trust can make all the difference.”
Sheriff Pohlmann said keeping schools safe requires cooperation among law enforcement, educators, families, students and the community.
“This is a team effort, and our deputies are proud to be part of that team,” the Sheriff said.
Motorists also are asked to do their part to keep our children safe by slowing down and remaining alert in school zones, obeying posted speed limits and crossing guards, avoiding distractions and watching for students walking or biking to and from school.
“Please be patient, pay attention and give yourself a little extra time, especially during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “A few extra minutes on your commute is a small price to pay to help keep our children safe.”
