SBSO DEPUTIES COMPLETE ACCIDENT RECONSTRUCTION SCHOOL
Two St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office deputies recently finished a lengthy accident reconstruction school, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Sgt. Bryan Fleetwood, left, and Dep. Christopher Manno, both of the Field Operations Bureau Traffic Division, successfully completed the Northwestern Center for Public Safety Traffic Crash Investigation and Reconstruction Course held at the Louisiana State Police Training Academy in Baton Rouge.
The nine-week course is divided into several core classes, including: crash investigation, vehicle dynamics and traffic crash reconstruction.
According to Capt. Stephen Ingargiola, director of training for the Sheriff’s Office, the course teaches deputies how to properly document crash evidence, which includes the roadway and vehicle damage evidence, and how to calculate mathematical equations to determine how the crash occurred, and, in some cases, how to calculate impact speeds of vehicles involved.
Capt. Ingargiola said the class also included instruction on how to accurately determine if someone involved in an accident was distracted by means of a cell phone or if they were under the influence of alcohol or narcotics at the time of the accident.
Attendance for Sgt. Fleetwood and Dep. Manno was funded by the Louisiana Traffic Records Coordinating Committee and the Highway Safety Commission, with no expense to the Sheriff’s Office other than room and board to attend.
Sgt. Fleetwood started his career in law enforcement with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office in 2010 as a member of the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division, and he graduated from Peace Officers Standards and Training, or P.O.S.T., police academy the same year.
He was promoted to his current rank in 2014, and transferred to the Traffic Division in 2017. He also is a member of the Motorcycle Division.
Dep. Manno began his career with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office in 2014, and he graduated from Peace Officers Standards and Training, or P.O.S.T., police academy in 2015.
Prior to joining the Traffic Division in 2019, Dep. Manno was a member of the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division. He also is a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics or SWAT team and the Motorcycle Division.
