SBSO DEP. JULES MARTIN NAMED CERTIFIED FIREARMS INSTRUCTOR

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Dep. Jules Martin recently became a Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certified Firearms Instructor, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Dep. Martin, who is a member of the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division’s 3rd Platoon, began his journey to becoming a firearms instructor in April when he successfully completed a qualification course at the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office Training Academy.

After completing that qualification course, Dep. Martin advanced to a two-week P.O.S.T. Firearms Instructor School consisting of Adult Learning Instructor Development (IDC) and P.O.S.T Firearms Curriculum, which he successfully completed.

According to Capt. Stephen Ingargiola, SBSO director of training, firearms instructors teach individuals how to safely and effectively handle firearms by providing training in proper shooting techniques, firearm safety, maintenance and marksmanship.

“Additionally, they might cover topics like situational awareness, self-defense strategies, and legal aspects of firearm use,” Capt. Ingargiola said. “Their role is crucial in promoting responsible gun ownership and enhancing individuals’ skills for defensive purposes.”

Capt. Ingargiola said Dep. Martin put in many hours of training, perfecting his craft prior by attending and passing the Instructor Program.

“He is an example of how putting in the hard work pays off,” he said. “We are excited to add Dep. Martin to our firearms training staff.”

Dep. Martin said he is honored to be a part of SBSO’s team of certified firearms instructors.

“I wanted to become a firearms instructor because I want to be able to help my fellow colleagues become more proficient shooters and perform at a higher standard,” he said.

Dep. Martin, who joins longtime firearms instructors Lt. David Culpepper, Lt. Robert Mire, Maj. David DiMaggio, Lt. Raymond Theriot and Lt. Al Clavin, began his career in law enforcement in 2018 as a member of the Corrections Division.

In 2020 he graduated from the Peace Officers Standards and Training, P.O.S.T. police academy, and he joined the Patrol Division the following year.
