SBSO DEP. JULES MARTIN III HONORED AS DEPUTY OF THE YEAR

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce that Dep. Jules Martin III has been named the 2024-25 Deputy of the Year, recognizing his outstanding dedication and service to the community, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Dep. Martin was honored by the Knights of Columbus Archbishop F. Rummel Council 5747 and its Ladies Auxiliary, along with St. Bernard Firefighter of the Year Capt. Joshua Wolfe and Acadian Emergency Medical Technician of the Year Jess Kingston.

The three first responders were recognized during a banquet held this afternoon (Jan. 19) at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Paris Road in Chalmette.

Sheriff Pohlmann commends Dep. Martin for his exceptional contributions to public safety.

“He exemplifies the qualities we strive for in law enforcement – dedication, professionalism, and a heart for service,” the Sheriff said. “This recognition is well-deserved, and we are proud to have him as part of our team.”

One of Dep. Martin’s supervisors, Capt. Richard Barr, said at the banquet that Martin receiving this recognition reminds us all that the work we do matters.

“Even on the toughest days, your dedication doesn’t go unnoticed,” Capt. Barr said to Dep. Martin. “You’ve earned this honor, not just for your achievements but for the example you set every single day.”

Dep. Martin, who has served with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office for seven and a half years, began his career as a civilian employee in 2017 in the Corrections Division at the Parish Prison.

He became a commissioned deputy in 2018 and graduated from the Police Office and Standards and Training, or P.O.S.T. police academy, in 2020.

Dep. Martin has worked in several capacities, including his current assignment with the Field Operations Bureau Crime Prevention Unit, focusing on proactive strategies to reduce crime, enhance community safety, and foster partnerships between law enforcement and the public.

In addition to his primary role, Dep. Martin serves as an operator with the Sheriff’s Office SBSO Special Weapons and Tactics, or SWAT team. He also is a Louisiana POST-certified firearms instructor, a certification that required rigorous training and testing, further demonstrating his commitment to professional excellence, and serves as treasurer for the St. Bernard Parish Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 64, contributing his time and efforts to support his colleagues and the community.

Dep. Martin said he is inspired daily by his father, Jules Martin Jr., a retired New Orleans Police Department officer who now works with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Division’s Narcotics Unit, and credits him as the reason he pursued a career in law enforcement.

“Being named Deputy of the Year means that the work we do, even when it feels unnoticed, truly matters,” Dep. Martin said. “I’m honored to receive this recognition and remain committed to serving the citizens of St. Bernard Parish with integrity and professionalism.”

Dep. Martin said he looks forward to continuing his career with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, aspiring to rise through the ranks and make a positive impact on the department and the community.

Congratulations, Dep. Jules Martin III, on this well-earned recognition as Knights of Columbus Deputy of the Year.
