SBSO DEP. CHRISTOPHER MANNO HONORED BY UMC
St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Dep. Christopher Manno was recently honored by University Medical Center New Orleans’ Trauma Program during a Lifesaving Recognition Service, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Dep. Manno was recognized for his decisive actions during a serious vehicle crash in Meraux where he applied a tourniquet to a crash victim suffering from a compound femur fracture. His quick thinking and effective hemorrhage control helped stabilize the victim and likely saved his life before emergency medical personnel arrived.
This recognition from UMC is part of the national “Stop the Bleed” initiative, which stresses the importance of immediate intervention in trauma care. The initiative stems from the Hartford Consensus, developed following mass casualty events such as the Sandy Hook shooting and the Boston Marathon bombing. Led by the late Dr. Norman McSwain, it united leaders from medicine, law enforcement, and the military to prevent deaths from uncontrolled bleeding.
Sheriff Pohlmann praised Dep. Manno’s response, calling it a powerful example of the vital role first responders play in critical moments.
“His swift actions represent the very best of our department,” the Sheriff said. “This is the kind of professionalism and courage we count on in every emergency.”
Dep. Manno began his law enforcement career in 2014 with SBSO, serving in the Corrections Division at the parish jail. After graduating from the Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) police academy in 2016, he transferred to the Field Operations Bureau’s Patrol Division.
In 2019, he joined the Traffic Division, where he currently serves as a certified crash reconstructionist.
Dep. Manno holds several specialized roles within the agency — he is a certified instructor and a member of the Motorcycle Division, a Marine Division boat operator, and an operator with the Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) team. He has also been selected to attend an upcoming sniper school.
