SBSO COLLECTS UNUSED OR EXPIRED MEDICATIONS
St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlmann is thanking residents who participated in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day held on Saturday, Oct. 25 where the Sheriff’s Office collected 55 pounds of unused or expired medications at Walgreens in Chalmette.
In addition to the event, the drop box at the Sheriff’s Office Field Operations Bureau on Paris Road has taken in 198 pounds of medications over the past year – helping keep hundreds of potentially dangerous pills out of circulation.
For those who missed the Drug Take-Back Day, the medication drop box is accessible year-round at SBSO’s Field Operations Bureau located at 4700 Paris Road in Chalmette. Residents can safely drop off prescription and over-the-counter medications there anytime during regular business hours.
The Drug Enforcement Administration sponsors a twice-yearly National Drug Take-Back Day, one in April and another in October. Since its launch in 2010, the DEA-led Take-Back initiative has successfully collected more than 20 million pounds of prescription drugs nationwide.
Sheriff Pohlmann said drug take-back programs offer safe and anonymous ways to dispose of unused or expired medications to prevent drug misuse and protect the environment.
“This program gives residents a safe and responsible way to dispose of old medications, keeping them out of the wrong hands and protecting our community,” the Sheriff said.
