SBSO CELEBRATES NATIONAL CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS WEEK
While the community most often sees deputies out on patrol, some of the most critical work in public safety happens behind secure doors, where St. Bernard Parish Sheriffâs Office correctional officers maintain order, ensure safety and carry out one of the most demanding roles in law enforcement, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
In recognition of National Correctional Officers Week, May 3-9, 2026, the Sheriffâs Office honors our dedicated deputies and staff who serve inside the St. Bernard Parish Correctional Facility and Juvenile Detention Center.
Established in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan, the week highlights the essential role correctional officers play in maintaining safety, security and order in challenging environments.
Nearly 70 deputies serve at the adult correctional facility, with 30 assigned to the Juvenile Detention Center, each playing a vital role in daily 24/7 operations.
On both the adult and juvenile sides, deputiesâ responsibilities range from supervising inmates, conducting searches and preventing contraband to responding to emergencies, coordinating medical care and managing visitation.
Administrative staff, medical personnel and civilian employees also play a key role in keeping operations running smoothly.
âOur correctional officers work in one of the most challenging areas of law enforcement,â Sheriff Pohlmann said. âTheir work often goes unseen, but it is essential to public safety in our parish.â
Col. Kevin Sensebe, commander of the Corrections Division, said deputies must be ready to respond at any moment while also supporting efforts that prepare inmates for life beyond incarceration, including the Sheriffâs Officeâs partnership with Nunez Community College to provide education and workforce training.
âOur deputies are constantly monitoring, de-escalating and making decisions that protect staff, inmates and the community,â Col. Sensebe said.
At the Juvenile Detention Center, Maj. Dennis Morgan oversees deputies who also serve as mentors and role models to teens.
âThey help guide young people toward better choices while maintaining a safe, structured environment,â Maj. Morgan said.
Sheriff Pohlmann said the week is an important reminder to recognize the dedication of Corrections Division deputies.
âWe are proud of the work they do and grateful for their service,â he said. âTheir role is critical to our mission of âKeeping St. Bernard Safe.ââ
